A Loaf from the Heart of the Wheat
Omar Khayyamخیام
گر دست دهد ز مغز گندم، نانی
If there should come to hand a loaf from the heart of the wheat,
وز می دو منی ز گوسفندی، رانی
two measures of wine, and a leg of mutton,
با لالهرخی و گوشه بستانی
with a tulip-cheeked companion in a corner of a garden,
عیشی بود آن، نه حد هر سلطانی
that is a pleasure beyond the reach of many a sultan.
A note for readers
A quatrain on simple pleasures that outdo a king’s. It is often set beside FitzGerald’s ‘A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou’, which draws on quatrains of this kind. Like all the Rubaiyat, it is attributed to Khayyam, but the attribution is debated.
