Ghazal · 14th century

A knot from her curl

Hafez

Though a knot from her curl has fallen into my affairs,

I still look to her generosity to untie it.

Do not take the redness of my face for joy, for like a cup

my cheek shows the reflection of my heart's blood.

The minstrel's melody will carry me out of myself;

ah, if I am not admitted behind this veil!

I have become the watchman of my heart's sanctuary all night long,

so that I let nothing but thought of her within this curtain.

I am that magician poet who, by the spell of words,

rains down candy and sugar from the reed of my pen.

The eye of my fortune fell asleep to her tale;

where is a breeze of grace that will wake me?

Since I cannot dare to see you as you pass, my friend,

whom can I ask to say a word to my friend for me?

Last night she said that Hafez is all show and hypocrisy;

but apart from the dust of her door, with whom do I trade?
