A heart that holds the cup of Jamshid

Hafez

A heart that reveals the unseen and holds the cup of Jamshid,

why should it grieve over a ring that is lost for a moment?

Do not give the treasury of your heart to the down and moles of beggars;

give it into the hand of a kingly one who will hold it in honour.

Not every tree can bear the cruelty of autumn;

I am the slave of the cypress's resolve, for it stands so firm.

The season has come when, from joy, like the drunken narcissus,

whoever has six dirhams will lay them at the foot of the cup.

Now, like the rose, do not hold back your gold from the price of wine,

for universal reason charges you with a hundred faults.

No one knows the secret of the unseen; do not recite tales:

what confidant of the heart has a way into this sanctuary?

My heart, which used to boast of solitude, now has a hundred affairs

with the morning wind, for the scent of your curl.

Whom shall I ask for my heart's desire? For there is no beloved

with both the grace of a glance and the way of generosity.

What profit can be had from the pocket of Hafez's cloak?

For we sought the Eternal, and he keeps an idol.
