A good omen

Hafez

Our head of devotion, and the threshold of the Friend's presence:

for whatever befalls our head is the Friend's will.

I have seen no equal to the Friend, though I set the moon and sun

as mirrors facing the Friend's face.

What can the breeze tell of the state of our narrow heart,

folded layer on layer like the petals of a bud?

I am not the only jar-carrier in this monastery that burns the rends;

many a head in this workshop has been broken between stone and jar.

Was it you who combed that ambergris-scattering curl,

that the wind has turned to perfume and the earth smells of ambergris?

Scattered before your face is every rose petal in the meadow;

a ransom for your stature is every cypress on the bank of the stream.

The speaking tongue falls to lamenting when it tries to describe longing;

what room is there for the idle pen with its slit tongue?

Your face came into my heart: I shall find my desire,

for a good state follows on the heels of a good omen.

Not only now is Hafez's heart in the fire of desire;

like the wild tulip, it has borne its brand since the first day.
