A cup or two at dawn

Hafez

Yesterday at dawn I happened to have a cup or two,

and wine from the saqi's lip had touched my tongue.

In my drunkenness I wanted to return to the beauty of my youth,

but the divorce had already been pronounced.

In the stations of the Path, wherever we travelled,

safety and gazing on beauty had parted ways.

Saqi, give cup after cup, for on the journey of the Path

whoever did not come as a lover had fallen into hypocrisy.

O reader of dreams, give me good news, for last night the sun

had shared my room in the sugar-sleep of the dawn draught.

I was imagining I might take a corner of that drunken eye;

my strength and patience were worn out before the arch of her brow.

Had Shah Yahya, Helper of the Faith, not acted generously,

the affairs of kingdom and faith would have fallen out of order.

Hafez, in the hour he was writing this scattered verse,

the bird of his thought had fallen into the snare of longing.
