A city full of graceful ones

Hafez

This is a city full of graceful ones, with a beauty on every side;

friends, love is calling to all, if you mean to do something.

The eye of the sky will never see a more wondrous youth than this;

no one will ever hold a lovelier beauty in their hand.

Who has ever seen a body made of soul?

May no dust from us earthly ones ever touch the hem of her robe.

Why drive a broken one like me from your side?

All I hope for, at most, is a kiss or an embrace.

The wine is pure: take it. The time is sweet: hurry.

Who knows if there will be another spring next year?

In the garden the companions, like the tulip and the rose,

have each raised a cup in memory of some beloved's face.

How shall I undo this knot? How shall I reveal this secret?

A pain, and a hard pain; a task, and a difficult task.

Every strand of Hafez's hair is in the hand of a playful curl;

it is hard to sit still in a land like this.
