The story
Shab-e Yalda falls on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Families gather late with watermelon, pomegranates, nuts and dried fruit, and often read from the Divan of Hafez, keeping each other company until the night turns toward the returning sun.
Persiahaus Studio drew a sky scattered with eight- and four-pointed stars on an ink ground, a pale moon above, and a half watermelon at the foot of the picture, its turquoise rind, red flesh and dark seeds set like a rising sun. The scene repeats across two canvases.
